Professor Bencie Woll; Clive Mason and BSL

We have received an interesting report from Mila Zhadan, who was a participant in the project run by Bencie Woll, Clive Mason and our Moscow colleagues. Mila, who is Deaf herself, has a Deaf husband and three Deaf children, reports on learning BSL over the course of 48 hours, spread over 12 weeks, and on the examination she sat at the beginning of December. Her assessment of both course and teaching is extremely positive. A transcript of her report is available from This email address is being protected from spambots. We are very grateful to Mila for this insider's view of what was clearly a worthwhile and stimulating project.

So ends our 25th anniversary year. To mark the occasion we present this picture of an RSL class run by Dasha Semenova, who was part of the first cohort of students at the Moscow Bilingual School for the Deaf.

And so to the future: an immediate problem involves the landlords of the Zaitseva Centre for Sign Language and Deaf Education. They are the Association of Deaf Russian Artists, to whom we are very grateful. However a dispute has arisen with the local authority, largely concerning an electricity bill. Anna Komarova and her staff are working to resolve the problem, and mbdsa is anxious to help if at all possible. Any help you can give, through donations, however small, will be gratefully received and fully acknowledged. If you are able to help please email This email address is being protected from spambots.
